Female yeast infections are both common and unpleasant. There are a number of common symptoms amongst them are; pain during sex, rash, redness, soreness, itching, yeasty smell and a white/yellow or even greenish discharge. It is relatively easy to spot when you are infected and because the symptoms are so uncomfortable women are usually quick to look for treatments that will offer them relief.
Yeast infections can occur even in the seemingly most healthy of people. The fungus Candida Albicans is on all of us, on our skin and in our mucous membranes, living along with a lot of other microorganisms. When something happens to disrupt the environment they live in there are several problems that can occur but one of the common results is a yeast infection.
Antibiotics and steroids are two of the things that can disrupt this balance as antibiotics kill all bacteria not just the bad that you want to get rid of, but also the good that keep in check the Candida Albicans. Diabetes is another cause as the fungus feeds off the sugar that diabetics tend to secrete making it easier for then to multiply and an infection to develop.
Women in particular are prone to suffering from yeast infections because of the chemical and hormonal changes they go through. A pregnant or nursing woman has a large hormonal change which throws off the balance mentioned before leaving her open to possible yeast infections. Oral birth control pills also change a woman's natural balance. Then there is menstruation each month plus menopause. A woman is constantly facing hormonal changes and so no wonder three quarters of them face this problem.
If you find you are often getting a yeast infection you need to stop using scented products in the infected region such as scented tampons, sprays and pads and stop douching. Douching washes out all the bacteria including those good ones we want to keep. It is not something that a woman should do at any time. Also avoid tight clothing and wear breathable materials such as cotton.
